Things to Do in Australia – Victoria

Victoria is located at the south eastern most corner of Australia and is the country’s second smallest state, and the most densely populated. Although it may be small, it is home to more than 30 national parks, an abundance of wildlife, including kangaroos and koala, hundreds of miles of coastline, and over 350 wineries.

Melbourne is the capitol of Victoria. It is an elegant and stylish city situated around the shores of Port Phillip Bay, and on the banks of the Yarra River. Well known for its rich arts community, shopping, dining and glamorous festivals, travelers who enjoy a cosmopolitan city want to make Melbourne a stop on their itinerary.

During your visit to Melbourne, be sure not to miss:

• The Queen Victoria Market is the oldest and largest open air market in the Southern Hemisphere. Here you can find anything from fresh produce and gourmet food items, to clothing and souvenirs.

• National Gallery of Victoria is the oldest and largest gallery and museum in Australia. It holds more than 70, 000 items between its 2 buildings, which are just a short walking distance apart. One building houses international art, the other houses Australian art. Both buildings are open year round, except for major holidays. And admission is free!

• Royal Botanical Gardens are some of the most beautifully landscaped gardens in the world. Within walking distance from the city center, these world famous gardens boast more than 20 different types of gardens, including an interactive children’s garden and the Aboriginal Heritage Walk. • Federation Square is considered the city’s “hub”. This cultural precinct connects the city center with the Yarra River. It is comprised of art galleries, a museum, shops, restaurants, bars and a cinema.

Take a drive down the Great Ocean Road for an experience you will never forget. One of the world’s most scenic coastline drives begins at the town of Torquay and winds 273 km to the town of Warnambool. This picturesque road goes through the Surf Coast, Shipwreck Coast, beautiful Apollo Bay and Port Campbell National Park.

Just off shore from the Port Campbell National Park, the world famous Twelve Apostles can be found. These limestone formations are some of the most famous rocks in the world. This site was originally called Sow and Piglets, but was changed to “The Twelve Apostles” in the 1950’s, even though only nine remained, to lure more visitors to the area. Since then, another Apostle has collapsed, leaving only eight.
